North Carolina is growing, but membership in the Democratic and Republican parties is shrinking from all-time highs in 2008, according to a new analysis by Democracy North Carolina. As new people move into the state and others die, the profile of North Carolina voters keeps changing. Whites made up 81% of all registered voters 20 years ago, but their share now has dropped to 71%. Meanwhile, the share of voters who are choosing no party has swelled from 8% to 22% since 1993. Latino voters have nearly doubled in just the past five years, African Americans are 23% of the state’s 6.5 million voters, and registered women outnumber men by more than 550,000. Charlotte Observer editorial writer Fannie Flono parses out the meaning of some of these changes in her column today titled “Women, Unaffiliated Voters Are Key in N.C.”
