Yesterday (Monday, June 15th), some Durham staffers and our Durham interns, Christina and Brian, headed over to the General Assembly in Raleigh to support a coalition called Together NC in demonstrating for wise state budget choices that do not ignore the needs of North Carolina’s people. As you can see from the photos below, taken by the ever-talented Jenn Frye, there was an extremely diversified crowd, representing many different backgrounds, ages and issues. To see so many people come together, exercising their rights as citizens with dignity and conviction, was an extremely moving experience. I think of the people over in Iran, taking to the streets — and maybe risking their lives — to demand the first fair election in their lifetimes, and then I think of the people who made time to head over to Raleigh yesterday and speak up about their principles and I am reminded that, in so many ways, democracy takes courage:
