LOD: Fraud Fighters Adopt Fraud

True the Vote likes to portray its mission as exposing voter fraud and protecting election integrity. Improvements can be made in the election system, but too often vigilante protectors wind up creating more fraud than they prevent. Case in point is a new report from True the Vote that aims to debunk “the myth of voter suppression” and validate the need for voter ID requirements. To prove its thesis, True the Vote cites figures showing that nearly all the states with tough ID laws experienced an INCREASE in voter turnout from 2008 over 2012. Really?!? The report got nice play on rightwing blogs, but FairVote researchers have now uncovered the deception behind this report. It turns out that True the Vote used one way to calculate 2008 turnout and a different method, from a different source, that consistently inflates turnout data for 2012. To its credit, True the Vote has apparently removed its report from its website now that it’s been exposed as a fraud.
