Of all the times for us to have taken on this internship, we feel blessed to be interning for Democracy NC right now. From Moral Mondays to the Supreme Court decisions, we are witnessing something truly historic in this state and nation.
This past Monday was the biggest Moral Monday yet, with thousands of protesters and 120 arrested, taking the total to more than 600 arrestees. As arrestees filed into bus number three, then four, then five, the crowds of protestors roared, “You’re gonna need another bus, because baby there are more of us!”
At this point, Moral Mondays’ growing momentum is undeniable, and the protests shed light on the underlying problem: the people do not feel that their voices are being heard in Raleigh. In the words of Goldsboro Mayor Al King, “Something strange is going on right now in North Carolina.” And Mayor King is right! National media have flocked to Moral Mondays and the movement for social and economic justice is gaining more and more momentum.
After the disappointing Supreme Court decision that struck down the heart of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, we believe that even more folks will continue to show up to Moral Mondays. The fight cannot end after the legislative session ends. With Section 4 of the Act gone, we are going to have to fight harder than ever against suppressive voting laws. Now is the time to contact both your state and congressional legislators!
