LOD: Double Crossed

A new column by Chris Kromm of the Institute for Southern Studies reveals how this week’s release of jaw-dropping numbers about alleged double voting in North Carolina is more about whipping up hysteria to justify voter suppression measures than actually finding real cases of fraud. In state after state, after sensational releases based on the Interstate Voter Crosscheck Program, the big scary numbers dwindle to a tiny sliver of cases with any evidence of fraud. Even the head of the multi-state program admits, “Experience in the crosscheck program indicates that a significant number of apparent double votes are false positives and not double votes. Many are the result of errors voters sign the wrong line in the poll book, election clerks scan the wrong line with a barcode scanner, or there is confusion over the father/son voters (Sr. and Jr.).” But by the time the truth comes to light, public paranoia is amply stoked and the media is on to the next shocker.
