Over the past week, the Democracy Summer interns have been hard at work across the state carrying the message that our state wants a government that is of, by, and for the people, free of the influence of big money. Students had the opportunity to speak to their local community groups, join in demonstrations at the General Assembly in Raleigh, and work daily to organize their communities to preserve our voting rights, which are under assault from the legislature. You can see below a few scenes from this week in Democracy Summer.
Louis Duke – Communications Intern
Charlotte Team
“This week, the Charlotte team spoke to a group of community leaders about Democracy NC, what our role is as interns, and what our objective is in the community. They mentioned that seeing young folks being involved in fighting for state and local issues was inspiring for them. We are LEADERS!”
Fayetteville Team
“On May 31st, after the NAACP’s “Forward Together” Tour stop at Warner Temple AME Zion Church in Wilmington, Nancy Shakir, Reverend Curtis Gatewood, Deborah Maxwell, and other Church officials gather for a picture to commemorate the event.”
Greenville Team
“We spent lobby day (Wednesday, June 12) with these two activists and advocates, Melanie Goff Bradley (far left), who is involved with Democracy NC in the Rocky Mount area, and Judy Willougbhy (far right), with Concerned Citizens and Democracy NC in New Bern. We visited several legislators with them, discussing pressing issues like public finance, voting rights and education. This picture was taken on top of the NC Legislature overlooking downtown Raleigh.”
Winston-Salem Team
“At Democracy Summer Lobby Day, women were lobbying for public education. They want to support the fight to protect favorable funding for public schools in the state. These outspoken women were set up outside of the State Legislative Building using the power of speech to share their message, which is part of what a democracy is all about.”
