Another week of Dem NC Summer! We moved our phonebanking days to Tuesday and Wednesday this week because we were attending a Democratic Women of Greenville meeting Thursday. Our phone banking on Wednesday was accompanied by a nice summer storm with thunder that shook the windows. I had the most interesting conversation with one caller, an older gentleman who had just moved back home and didn’t trust the government officials in his area. He also vocalized many racial issues he had with the modern times. After our fifteen minute convo about bettering the government, he kindly declines my request to call his senator. Needless to say I was very confused at the end of our call. The rest of the night flew by with more calls to some very interesting citizens.
The Democratic Women meeting, had a special speaker, Hillary Clinton political advisor, who was endorsing Cal Cunningham, spoke for few minutes. Also Rep. Edith Warren graced us with her presence. The women welcome Ana and I with open arms. All except one lady who we affectionately call “Debbie Downer” Womp womp woooommppp! She has to be one of the most negative people we’ve ever met. No one could say anything right, even Rep. Edith Warren wasn’t spared by depressing tone.
As each week passes we are coming closer to the realization that organizing isn’t all flowers and lollipops but about actually hearing each and every person and their opinion because they’re feelings count. No matter how boring, annoying or pessimistic they may be.

I’m late to the dance — but what a great post! It made me laugh and think. It’s great you could learn something from Debbie Downer, esp. since every group seems to have one of those, i.e., the designated Human Eeyore!!
