As of now, things are really moving along at a great pace. I had no idea how many amazing opportunities came along with being associated with Democracy NC. Strangely, it doesn’t feel like I’m just starting. It seems like I have been working here forever.
Recently Jenn, Jabari and I attended a luncheon with the women of AAUW. The women there were so kind, and they were extremely intelligent. The ladies asked questions that really made us think. One woman asked why we choose to call Public Campaign financing “Voter Owned Elections”. She suggested that we called it Citizen Funded Elections. That was definitely some food for thought. I had never really analyzed the title in depth before. That was our first official speaking engagement of the summer.
I also attended the North Carolina Legislative Black Caucus Foundation Scholarship weekend. That was a very rewarding experience. It was at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel in RTP. Everything was beautiful. I got to sit in on panel discussions on issues such as healthcare reform, student education, and scholarships. After each forum there was a chance for listeners to ask questions. I made sure to get a few important ones in. Roland Martin spoke at dinner on the first night. I got sick so I missed it. I was SO upset.
Aside from going to events, time in the office is great. Our time here is always time well spent! I can’t believe so much time has passed. Before we know it, Summer will be over =(.
Love, Peace, & Politics,
Juanita
You ARE making a difference! 🙂 And just having you and Jabari around the Durham office brings a whole new wave of energy into the door each day.
We need to find another time for you to hear Roland Martin. Hope it’s soon!
