FairVote’s Rob Richie has a featured op-ed in the Washington Post that explains why the winner-take-all election system lets a minority of voters elect a majority of the members of Congress. His solution involves adopting federal and state laws that establish bigger US House districts with multiple members per district elected using forms of proportional representation. FairVote’s website has an interactive map that shows how states could have multi-member districts that allow more voters to successfully elect a candidate of their choice and allows more women and people of color to get elected to Congress. Richie argues that these plans are constitutional and grounded in our own electoral history – and they would produce less lopsided partisan delegations for a state like North Carolina.
