Amid prayers, songs, and speeches condemning a litany of new policies attacking the poor, seventeen protesters were arrested as they blocked the giant gold doors leading into the state Senate chamber. Adam Sotak of Democracy North Carolina joined the Rev. William J. Barber II of the NC NAACP and 15 others who followed the tradition of nonviolent civil disobedience to bring attention to an out-of-control General Assembly majority drugged out on Tea Party venom. More demonstrations are expected in the coming weeks to dramatize how Gov. Pat McCrory and the Republican leaders have succeeded in their goal to “rebrand North Carolina” into a state of polarization and hostility toward all things public – against public education, public health, public elections, public jobs, public accountability, public campaign financing, public space, public support for the unemployed and less fortunate.
