Here’s a newspaper report of a woman in Tennessee who has voted more than 60 years but who lacks a government photo ID and couldn’t get a “free” one from the state after many hours of ridiculous hassle. It’s a very thorough story, and it will be repeated in NC many times if the Republicans in the General Assembly get their way and override Gov. Perdue’s veto of H-351, the strict photo ID bill. The NC bill is even harsher than Tennessee’s law because the Volunteer State exempts elderly residents of nursing homes from the photo ID requirement; not so for veteran voters in NC. If Democrats tried to pass a law imposing stupid, bureaucratic hassles on honest elderly citizens, you’d see glossy mailers by the ton in the next election attacking them for hating grandmothers.
