Again this week, the students participating in the Democracy Summer program are showing the work they’re doing every day through photos. The images below offer a view through the lens of the young people who are on the front lines of the fight for voting rights -and so much more- in this state. From historical reflections to community organizing meetings, the images below offer a perspective on our democracy not often experienced by the students of this state. This is what democracy looks like.

The people are fed up with their elected officials. Those in power do not accurately represent the people of our state and this is causing the middle class to shrink and the poor to get poorer, while the upper classes amasses large quantities of wealth. If this trend continues, the people will be left with nothing, and those at the top will have nothing left to exploit.

While gathering on the balcony of the general assembly, we witnessed activists getting arrested who were continuing their efforts to be heard. Everyone gathered on the balcony was not forced to leave, but we were told to be completely quiet. We could not clap, sing, stomp, or chant. Any type of noise or support of the activism below would result in an arrest.

Wednesday we had a very spontaneous moment and jumped in the car to head to Raleigh to attend a NAACP press conference organized by the youth. We walked from the church to hand deliver Governor McCrory requests to veto bills attacking voting rights, education, workers rights and other issues. This picture symbolizes how our ancestors marched for the rights we have today, now we are doing the same for North Carolina’s children.

“We are the raging grannies and we are not afraid!” sang the Raging Grannies yesterday at a community meeting. Their songs focused on social justice issues such as education, the environment, voting rights, and immigration. They also sang a selection at the Duke rate hike hearing rally that took place at the Forsyth County Courthouse this week.
