Week 1:
I cannot believe how quickly our first week went by! What with the process of moving to Greenville for the summer and starting work, I can definitely say my week has not been dull.
Brittany, Tia and I started out the week with a lot of little administrative things. It DROVE us all crazy waiting an hour for parking permits on Monday and we are still counting the minutes until the so called “technology experts” fix our computers. But, the three of us set up our little office in the Austin Building on ECU’s central campus quite nicely and it’s already starting to feel like home.
On Tuesday, Adam came to visit the team and we learned the finer points of phonebanking. He demonstrated several calls and how to handle both the enthusiastic and the icy calls. Later that day, instead of phonebanking like the rest of the groups, the three of us and Adam attended Tia’s coalition meeting. Representatives from the Pitt County Coalition Against Racism (CAR) spoke to the group and really got the coalition “revved up” to further its efforts here in Greenville.
On Wednesday, we tried our luck with phone banking and overall I feel it went quite well. Most of the numbers were disconnected, but I was able to get through to some people that were excited about Democracy North Carolina’s mission and interested in joining us for Lobby Day on June 17!
Thursday was quite ENGAGING as Brittany and I had our first speaking engagement! We spoke to the Wilson chapter of the NAACP about Campaign Finance Reform and Voter-owned elections. The event was also a first for the chapter as they had never been formally introduced to VOE by Democracy North Carolina. And people were so receptive of our message we got around 13 to sign our postcards that we send to legislatures that show public interest in election reform. After that, the three of us went to dinner to celebrate a successful first event!
Though week 1 is done, we had lots of fun and hopefully everyone got all my puns!
I’ll keep you all POSTED (pictures to come!)
