National Resource Groups
- Public Campaign: National leader and advocate for clean money campaign finance reform.
- Center for Responsive Politics: Your guide to who’s giving and who’s getting in Federal Election campaigns – wonderful to search industry giving on a state by state as well as national level.
- FECinfo.com: The best on-line electronic library of political money in Federal elections – you can search the huge database of Federal Elections Commission campaign finance information.
- The National Institute on Money in State Politics: A nonpartisan, nonprofit program dedicated to accurate, comprehensive and unbiased documentation and research on campaign finance at the state level.
- Common Cause: Citizens’ lobbying group which tracks the influence of money in congressional and presidential politics and advocates various campaign finance reforms.
- U.S. Public Interest Research Group: National advocacy office for the state PIRGs, non-partisan research and advocacy groups promoting reforms and tracking money in politics at the state level.
- Public Citizen: The Ralph Nader-founded consumer group monitors Congress and lobbies on a range of consumer, health, safety, and good government issues — including campaign finance.
- Campaign Legal Center: This nonpartisan, nonprofit organization offers nonpartisan analyses of issues and participates in shaping our nation’s policies involving campaign finance and elections; political communication and advertising; and government ethics.
- Nonprofit VOTE: A national organization that provides excellent resources for nonprofits interested in non-partisan voter engagement activities.
- DEMOS: A non-partisan public policy research and advocacy organization that uses research, policy development, and advocacy to work with advocates and policymakers around the country in pursuit of a more equitable economy, an inclusive democracy, an empowered public sector and responsible U.S. engagement overseas.
- League of Women Voters Education Fund: National organization works to encourage the informed and active participation of citizens in government and increase understanding of major policy issues.
- Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law: A nonpartisan, nonprofit organization formed in 1963 to involve the private bar in providing legal services to address racial discrimination. The principal mission of the Lawyers’ Committee is to secure, through the rule of law, equal justice under law.
- NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund: Founded in 1940 under the leadership of Thurgood Marshall, LDF focuses on issues of education, voter protection, economic justice and criminal justice through advocacy and litigation. It also encourages students to embark on careers in the public interest through scholarship and internship programs.
- American Association of University Women: AAUW works to promote education and equity for women and girls, including equal representation in public office. It sponsors a useful voter’s guide at election time.
- CourtSystem.org: accurate and easy to navigate directory of legal and law enforcement office contact information.
Government Resources
- The State Board of Elections: State agency with the overall responsibility for administering the elections process in North Carolina, plus you can download candidate finance reports and track who their major donors are.
- The North Carolina General Assembly: Find your state legislators and contact them, see who is on what committees, and see how they voted. Look up bills being debated and when committees will discuss them.
North Carolina-Focused Organizations
- The Institute for Southern Studies: Founded in 1970 by veterans of the civil rights movement, the Institute for Southern Studies and its award-winning journal Southern Exposure have established a national reputation as an essential resource for grassroots activists, community leaders, individuals and organizations working to bring lasting social and economic change to the region. - NC Center for Voter Education: Dedicated to improving the quality and responsiveness of North Carolina’s election system by examining North Carolina’s current system of campaign finance and election laws, and by promoting research and public discussion about the electoral process.
- Common Cause — North Carolina: A nonprofit, nonpartisan citizen’s lobbying organization promoting open, honest and accountable government. It also coordinates the NC Coalition for Lobbying & Government Reform.
- North Carolina PIRG: The North Carolina Public Interest Research Group works on consumer- and health-related issues and is one of the member groups of North Carolina Voters for Clean Elections.
- NC Politics is a nonpartisan resources that provides hundreds of local internet links to most candidates running for elected office in NC.
- League of Women Voters: The League of Women Voters, formed in 1920, is a nonpartisan organization that encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government.
- NC Policy Watch: NC Policy Watch is a public policy organization with a simple mission — to change the way our elected officials debate important issues facing North Carolina.
- Common Sense Foundation: A nonpartisan public policy organization whose goal is to ensure that state government and the political process attend to the interrelated economic, political, social, and cultural needs of those systematically denied access to power.
- NC Justice Center: Dedicated to helping low income and working poor North Carolinians escape poverty and achieve economic security. Staffed by a team of lawyers, community educators and policy analysts.
- NC Coalition for Lobbying & Government Reform: A non-partisan non-profit organization dedicated to promoting good-government policies that level the playing field for the citizens of North Carolina. The coalition is made up of more than 50 non-profit organizations and individuals advocating for tougher lobbying and ethics laws as well as increased public awareness about the legislative process and its flaws, including such issues as redistricting.
- North Carolina Voters for Clean Elections is a large coalition of organizations seeking to improve the vitality of democracy in NC by enacting voluntary public financing programs for candidates who earn the public’s trust.
- HKonJ: A coalition that was called together by the NC State Conference of NAACP Branches and now includes 80 partner organizations that work year-round to advance a 14-Point Agenda for justice and equality.
- North Carolina NAACP: The state chapter of the premier civil-rights organization in the United States. It coordinates the H K on J coalition and seeks to ensure political, educational, social and economic justice for all people of color.
- North Carolina Black Leadership Caucus: Organized in 1976, the goal of the caucus is to seek full equity for all black North Carolinians, from the mountains to the sea.
- Organize North Carolina serves the broader progressive movement across North Carolina by offering activists a way to connect with all sectors of the movement, spreading useful ideas and maintaining a calendar on which many organizations post their events.
