Our Research Director
Most of Democracy North Carolina’s research is conducted by our Executive Director, Bob Hall. Bob has been conducting research projects on economic, social, political and electoral issues since 1970. He is the former executive director of the Institute for Southern Studies, one of Democracy NC’s predecessor organizations, and helped found its quarterly journal, Southern Exposure. In 1992, he was named a MacArthur Fellow by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation in Chicago for his work at the Institute. He is the author of a number of definitive research studies, including The Democracy Index (1992 and 1996), The Green Index: A State-by-State Guide to the Nation's Environmental Health (1991) and Environmental Politics: Lessons from the Grassroots (1987).
