Facing South has another installment in its analysis of Republican proposals to require voters to show a photo ID each time they vote. This one focuses on the high costs of implementing a photo ID requirement, based on the fiscal notes prepared for legislation introduced in various states. The high cost for no gain is a theme running through a Democracy North Carolina op-ed column published in several newspapers. The League of Women Voters also has an op-ed that describes several safeguards in place in North Carolina that make voter fraud more a matter of gossip than reality.

Considering the efforts of organized groups such as ACORN with voter registration fraud, can we do without this requirement and risk undermining our votes? http://christianactionleague.org/news/acorn-bogus-voter-registrations-and-barack-obama/ .
The article you referenced speculates on cost estimates to implement this law and that is all that it is speculation. It could cost zero by using existing judges to make voter id decisions.

We have groups that are paying ACORN to register people and the evidence shows they are not concerned with honesty. I do think this is a good thing to do. Again if banks require a photo id to cash a check, certainly we can ask the same thing to verify the voter is who he says he is for the sacred duty of voting.

I strongly disagree with Democracy NC and will continue to urge my state legislation to enact this requirement for NC voters.
